Sharon's letter to me after her dentistry:

Dear Olivia,

Since I was the age of 8 or 9

I have been terrified of dentists and needles, and I have to say sceptical of alternative therapies. I couldn't quite grasp how someone could get into my mind and tell me everything was going to be o.k.

But here I am at 52 years of age saying 'thank you' for helping me to change my feelings and allowing me to go to the dentist AND booking an appointment with a consultant - all in one week and then - having all my teeth out!

I had an over night stay in hospital and I was back home the next day.

Throughout, I needed no pain killers! I just didn't need any!

I am a different woman, my whole outlook on life has changed and boy just wait till I get my new teeth I am going to show the world what a real smile is all about.

Without you Olivia I could never have done it, and I am indebted to you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Sharon

Fear of Dentistry

A Resolution 6-month supported programme

A series of mental exercises to deduce your reluctance to visit the dentist, and build confidence.  You can have a most positive attitude to dentistry, allowing you to just keep on smiling...

The Resolution mini-programmes guide you through various techniques until you feel 100% confident.

Each programme is tailor-made for you, and the various exercises are recorded on CDs and sent to your home, with full written instructions.

You don't have to wade all through this programme on your own.  Your telephone coach will guide you every step of the way, and further mental exercises will be sent to you if more is required, until you are 100% confident.

Going to the dentist is something we all have to do, but for a few people, this creates anxiety and sleepless nights. And for some people, the phobia creates another problem - 'freezing'.

Imagine walking to the dentist, shaking uncontrollably on the way, and then being simply unable to walk through the door.  Many people have walked up and down outside the dentist's practice, unable to even step into the waiting room. They simply freeze.

These people are frozen with fear, and it means that they do not get the care they need for their teeth.

Here is Sharon's story - her letter to me after the programme is in the column on the left.

Sharon's Story

One day, back in 2005, I had a wonderful telephone call.

What could be better to start to the week, than a call to say someone I have seen has found their lives changed because of it. Sharon was so excited as she spoke on the phone. "I just wanted to say that I have been to the dentist" she began. I was so pleased.

I met Sharon (now aged 52) at the door a few weeks beforehand. Sharon had been so afraid to go to the dentist that she had not been, even for a check-up, since she was just a little girl of five years old. She had often tried, as she had been worried that her teeth needed urgent attention. However, the very thought of going to the dentist was enough to make her begin to shake.

There were a number of elements to the foundation of Sharon's fears, and they all began when she was about five years old.

One of the problems was that Sharon had visited the dentist on her own - even for dental work. She must have felt so alone.

Another problem related to the rubber face mask which dentists used to placed over children's mouths in order for them to have gas. I remember this experience well, myself. That horrible smell!  In order to make this past experience comfortable I used a mental exercise to change the mask into a magic 'chocolate mask', which smelled of chocolate.

This worked very well in removing that fear from Sharon's subconscious. I then had to tackle the problem of the fear of the pain.

The dentistry mini-programme includes an anaesthesia technique that would be used in Sharon's case for her memory of the injection.

The technique involves growing an analgesic glove around one hand, and then wherever this glove touches, the analgesia can flow into that area, like a mist of numbness.

The Resolution mini-programme CDs guide people through these mental exercises..

Afterwards, she found that she did not shake uncontrollably if ever the word 'dentist' was spoken.  She was able to walk straight in to the dentist, and while she was waiting in the waiting room, the exercises for analgesia were already beginning to create anaesthesia.  As she touched her cheek, she could feel the numbness already beginning.

As Sharon walked in, and sat in the dentist's chair, she felt confident.

Sharon had not been able to visit a dentist since the age of five, and her teeth were in a very bad condition.  The dentist said that she would have to have them all removed.

To many people, this would have been terrible news, but for Sharon, she couldn't wait to have dentures, because for over thirty years, she had not been able to smile without covering her mouth.

Sharon went confidently into the operation, and afterwards astounded all the medical professionals when she did not require any pain relief afterwards.  (Sharon had the normal anaesthetic during dental surgery).

Sharon found that while her mouth was healing, she needed no pain killers. She was delighted - read her letter to me down the left hand column.

Sharon remains on the panel of past clients willing to speak to others who need reassuring before beginning a Resolution Programme.
